CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - 99% of poison exposures in children younger than six are unintentional, that’s according to data reported to U.S. poison centers.

March 17-23 is National Poison Prevention Week. The Iowa Poison Control Center is a free service available 24/7 to all Iowans, which can help keep you out of the ER.

It’s located in Sioux City, and the phones are answered by registered nurses and pharmacists trained in clinical toxicology.

The IPCC Education and Outreach Manager Janna Day says medications and cleaning products are the most common unintentional poisonings. The center is also seeing an increase in calls for melatonin and other gummy medications.
